COMPOSTING INNOVATION BY ANJA BOOSTS PALUTA FARMERS' PRODUCTIVITY

14 Oct 2022

Padang Lawas, 14 October 2022 – PT Austindo Nusantara Jaya Agri Binanga (ANJA), a subsidiary of PT Austindo Nusantara Jaya Tbk (ANJ), located in North Padang Lawas, has recently offered training and assistance to the Sehati Farmer Group in Hutabaru Village. This initiative aims to reduce emissions from chemical fertilizers by creating compost from hay straw, which will ultimately serve as a natural fertilizer for the rice fields.

In addition, the ANJA team also created a Composting House with a capacity of 4 tons as a social innovation to reduce emissions from chemical fertilizers. During this activity, ANJA supplied the Sehati Farmer Group with 200 kilograms of rice seeds and 25 liters of organic liquid fertilizer.

Mrs. Yusnita, as chairman of the Sehati Farmers Group in Hutabaru Village, conveyed her heartfelt appreciation for the company's dedication and valuable contributions to the community, particularly to the farmers of Hutabaru Village.

"ANJA's contributions to our community are undeniable. I’m thankful for the company's assistance in improving agriculture in our village through its wide range of knowledge and support," she added.

Previously, the ANJA team also offered training and assistance to farmers in addressing the challenges posed by crop pests, including rats, sparrows, and insects, which are significant contributors to crop failures.

ANJA educated the Sehati Farmers Group in employing natural predators to counter rat attacks in the rice fields, specifically the Tyto Alba, also known as the Barn Owl,  an effective pest control measure in the rice fields. To deter insects, 500 Turnera subulata trees, a natural pest control plant, were planted to repel caterpillars naturally. These pest control initiatives are cost-effective, easy to implement, and sustainable. This array of alternative pest control techniques will significantly enhance the ecological balance of farmers' fields while reducing the reliance on pesticides.

Alongside offering training and guidance, ANJA also enhanced the water system for the Sehati Farmers Group's rice fields by installing two water wheels. The wheels channel water from the nearest river to the rice field area, ensuring a stable water supply, particularly during the dry season. In addition to installing water wheels, ANJA improved rice irrigation by adding water lines from the river to the reservoir. This facility increased the water volume in the reservoir and streamlined its distribution to the rice fields.

The guidance and training offered by ANJA are integral components of the Independent Farmer Program, which began in 2021 and was extended to the Sehati Farmer Group in Hutabaru Village, Simangambat District, North Padang Lawas Regency. The primary objective of this program is to contribute to realizing Sustainable Development Goals by advocating for environmentally friendly agricultural innovations.

ANJA is dedicated to cultivating the skills of the local community, enabling them to adapt to and prosper in the transition towards a more modern economy facilitated by socio-economic empowerment programs. This mentoring initiative will persist, adapting to the community's evolving needs, with a particular focus on rice fields.

Taupan Sibarani, General Manager of ANJA, has emphasized that the Independent Farmer Program is an integral component of the company's Responsible Development (RD) project. This initiative aims to enhance the socio-economic well-being of the local community. Through this support, the company anticipates strengthening its bonds with the community while simultaneously boosting rice production in Hutabaru Village. Taupan also highlighted that, in line with the company's commitment to reducing emissions, they are innovatively producing compost from hay straw to minimize the reliance on chemical fertilizers.

"If feasible, we will create additional programs tailored to the community's needs by exploring innovative opportunities. Moreover, we plan to extend the same program to other villages, aligning it with the specific requirements of each community," Taupan concluded.
