ANTICIPATING CLIMATE CHANGE, ANJ SOCIALIZES THE IMPORTANCE OF ESG TO THE COMMUNITY AND LOCAL GOVERNMENTS

In 2021, The World Resources Institute noted that Indonesia is included among the ten largest greenhouse gas emitters in the world. In addition, the palm oil sector is often associated with negative environmental impacts such as deforestation, loss of biodiversity, degradation of peatland ecosystems, and forest fires. Therefore, PT Austindo Nusantara Jaya Tbk (ANJ) through its subsidiary, PT Kayung Argo Lestari (KAL) conducted socialization and education to the public and local governments regarding the importance of ESG and Zero Deforestation.

The socialization conveyed the facts about climate change that occurred, such as the fact that in 2050, sea level rise due to global warming is projected to reach 35-40 cm relative to the 2000 value. As well as the fact that by the end of 2100, global temperatures are expected to be 1.8-4°C higher than the average temperature in 1980-1999.

The KAL team also further explained the climate change prevention efforts that have been carried out by the company, such as protecting forests and peatlands from deforestation, conducting fire prevention and management, reducing GHG emissions through energy efficiency, as well as managing waste and recycling efforts. The steps that can be taken collaboratively between companies, communities, and local governments in mitigating climate change were also presented during the socialization, such as collaborative efforts in managing HCV areas. The community is also advised not to practice slash and burn land clearing methods.

During the socialization, the KAL team also explained agronomic innovations that can be applied by the community in their daily life to reduce the impact of climate change, as well as conveying about supply chain schemes and the RSPO certification system.
