PRIORITIZING FPIC, ANJAP HOLDS A MEETING WITH TRADITIONAL RIGHTS OWNERS

21 Mar 2022

South Sorong, 21 March 2022 – Prioritizing Free Prior Informed Consent (FPIC), PT ANJ Agri Papua (ANJAP) held a meeting with the Abago and Saimar clans who own customary rights (PHU) in Kais, South Sorong on Friday (18/3).

Through various meetings and coordination between the company and the community, the two clans supported ANJAP to carry out canal opening and harvesting activities in the customary rights area of the two clans in Estate II. The clan's elders hoped that with the opening of Estate II, the clan's sago forest could help increase the family's economic income.

The meeting was also attended by Assistant II for Economic Affairs and Development of the South Sorong Regency Government Secretariat, Johan H Kokorule, together with the Head of the Plantation Agency and village officials who sat together to discuss plans to clear sago land and build canals

In accordance with the principle of FPIC, ANJAP held meetings with the two clans from the beginning of the Estate II sago land clearing plan. So that PHU could understand the plan well, as a basis for making decisions, determining agreements, and giving approval without pressure.

To answer several questions raised by the two clans, Gritje Fonataba, ANJ's Head of Government and Stakeholder Relations for the Papua Region, said that ANJAP runs a sago business on customary land rights based on a Business Permit for the Utilization of Non-Timber Forest Products (IUPHHBK) issued by the government. Therefore, the cooperation agreement between the company and PHU will follow the applicable laws and regulations.

"ANJAP will issue a cooperation agreement with PHU and realize the opening of the canal after signing an agreement with the Abago and Saimar clans regarding the hamlet boundaries and the local government issuing the Tual Price Decree," said Gritje Fonataba.

Johan H Kokorule, Assistant II for Economics and Development, explained that the selling price of sago and compensation for growing crops will be determined by the Regent of South Sorong, by prioritizing the principle of justice that benefits the community and the company.
